    Vehicle Tips

According to recent studies, 5 percent of all motor vehicle fatalities are clearly caused by automobile maintenance neglect.

The cooling system should be completely flushed and refilled about every 24 months. The level, condition, and concentration of coolant should be checked. (A 50/50 mix of anti-freeze and water is usually recommended.)

Never remove the radiator cap until the engine has thoroughly cooled. The tightness and condition of drive belts, clamps and hoses should be checked by a pro.

Change your oil and oil filter as specified in your manual, or more often (every 3,000 miles) if you make frequent short jaunts, extended trips with lots of luggage or tow a trailer.

Replace other filters (air, fuel, PCV, etc.) as recommended, or more often in dusty conditions. Get engine drivability problems (hard stops, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc.) corrected at a good shop.

A dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can pose a safety hazard. Replace worn blades and get plenty of windshield washer solvent.

Have your tires rotated about every 5,000 miles. Check tire pressures once a month; let the tires cool down first. Don't forget your spare and be sure your jack is in good condition.

Check your owner's manual to find out what fuel octane rating your car's engine needs then buy it.

Keep your tires inflated to the proper levels. Under-inflated tires make it harder for your car to move down the road, which means your engine uses more fuel to maintain speed.

Lighten the load. Heavier vehicles use more fuel, so clean out unnecessary weight in the passenger compartment or trunk before you hit the road.

Use the A/C sparingly. The air conditioner puts extra load on the engine forcing more fuel to be used.

Keep your windows closed. Wide-open windows, especially at highway speeds, increase aerodynamic drag and the result is up to a 10% decrease in fuel economy.

Avoid long idling. If you anticipate being stopped for more than one minute, shut off the car. Contrary to popular belief, restarting the car uses less fuel than letting it idle.

Stay within posted speed limits. The faster you drive, the more fuel you use. For example, driving at 65 miles per hour (mph) rather than 55 mph, increases fuel consumption by 20 percent.

Use cruise control. Using cruise control on highway trips can help you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, reduce your fuel consumption.

Keep your engine tuned. A fouled spark plug or plugged/restricted fuel injector can reduce fuel efficiency as much as 30 percent.

Inspect the engine's belts regularly. Look for cracks or missing sections or segments. Worn belts will affect the engine performance.

Have the fuel filter changed every 10,000 miles to prevent rust, dirt and other impurities from entering the fuel system.

Change the transmission fluid and filter every 15,000 to 18,000 miles. This will protect the precision-crafted components of the transmission/transaxle.

Inspect the suspension system regularly. This will extend the life of the vehicle's tires.

Stinn's is the best! Jerry has maintained my 1983 VW GTI and 2008 R32 forever. He's a top diagnostic man, and he and his staff can figure out any problem. You'll never find a better bunch of car guys. They can fix anything. And I'll never, ever go anywhere else. Even after I leave the state.

    -Brittany R.

Owner is trustworthy and honest and is always looking for the best for your vehicle. Very clean shop and awesome staff! Highly recommend.

    -James H.

Have brought my recently purchased MB Diesel to Jerry and again he never disappoints. The service and knowledge is incredible. The positive attitude and fairness is so welcome these days. This is THE place to bring your vehicle for repair.

    -Susan M.

This place is amazing! I found it on Yelp with all the stars while my son was driving up north about a half hour from Santa Maria, and his car was running rough. I called ahead of time, and they offered to check out my son's car. When he arrived, they immediately checked over his car and fixed it. He was back on the road in no time. Not only are they good at what they do, but they are really nice, kind people!

    -Edgar H.

Excellent service. Jerry and Chris were very helpful. Everything from sourcing parts to the end product. I would recommend anyone looking to do any preventative maintenance or repairs to not look twice. This is the place you want and need to go to.

    -Earl F.

Do you have an honest mechanic? Are you sure your mechanic is selling you only the repairs and parts you need? If you are not sure, you need to see Jerry Stinn. He is absolutely honest and straightforward. He will tell you what is wrong and what it will cost to fix it. I have never been so happy with an auto repair place anywhere ever. Stinn's is the best.

    -David C.

This place is great. No one likes having to pay to have their car repaired, but Stinn's makes it an easy process. Their staff is friendly and knowledgeable (ask for Jerry), and they are honest about what needs to be done and what can wait until next time. Reactive vs. Proactive. I wouldn't trust my car anywhere else. They specialize in German cars. Call today!

    -Richard L.

I went into Stinn's for my first time, and I cannot give them a better review. The owner, Jerry, helped me out, and I have not seen an honest, more qualified mechanic in years!

    -Gary N.

Have been a customer for about one year. If you have your European car serviced here (such as my BMW), they will also work on non-European cars such as my Toyota Sequoia and Lexus. Cannot say enough good things about this shop. They are cordial, take the time to really listen, and the place simply has a professional vibe to it. There is usually soothing classical music playing in the background to project a calm environment. I am extremely particular about my cars, and I am not at all surprised every review I see here is 5 stars. It is well deserved.

    -Ruby G.

Been going here for a couple years for repairs and maintenance on my BMW X3. Jerry has a seasoned crew of mechanics, and I wouldn't think about going anywhere else. The customer service is far above what I have received from any BMW dealership. Just talking to Jerry, you know that he knows exactly what is going on with the car and that he is dealing with you honestly. I highly recommend him. Once you bring your car here, you'll know it is no ordinary mechanic shop and your car is in good hands.

    -K.K.

Cannot say enough good things about Jerry and crew! We took our 1985 MB 280SL (grey market) there after taking it to a few other places. He worked his magic on it, and we now have a great running car. Will not let anyone else touch our car now.

    -Cali S.

I can't say enough great things about this place. Friendly workers. The owner explained everything in detail and gave me options I've never heard any mechanic shop give. Everyone in my family brings their vehicles here now. Highly recommended. Bonus...they have awesome succulents out front.

    -Samantha R.

Honest and knowledgeable. Two traits that are hard to come by at an auto repair station. Let alone, one that services European cars. Therefore, those that do live in Santa Maria, please give Jerry your business, he's an honest, hardworking, and reliable person, who deserves your community support. Thanks Jerry and Yvonne!

    -Katie H.

I instantly liked this place! They found my gas leak almost instantly and repaired it quickly with no appointment. They also are not into sugar coating things, just really honest people. This place isn't fancy, but they'll get the job done and do it right in a timely fashion. Great people!!!

    -Kev L.

Jerry and the crew are the most exceptional auto repair specialists in the area. They are resourceful in finding correct parts and informative when relaying issues they encounter. My classic VW bus and I have a new family at Stinn's.

    -Mary J.

By far the best auto repair with extremely kind, honest, knowledgeable people at Stinn's. I love this place. I can't even imagine better.

    -Trent C.

Fair and fast repairs with excellent communication! Other new Beetles have burnt to the ground on the side of the road due to electrical issues and the fuse box. Alternator and box replaced. Thanks again Jerry!

    -D.J.S.

If you own a German or European car, and you are in Santa Maria or within a fair driving distance, Stinn's is the absolute best shop for your vehicle. If you are taking your vehicle to other shops, or are looking for a new shop, Jerry's shop is unequivocally the best repair shop I have ever been to.

    -Rosie M.

I highly recommend Stinn's Autohaus. I have been taking my older model BMW X5 there for 3 years. I am happy with the work they do to keep my SUV running and in great shape. They are professional, honest and reasonable. I am so well taken care of as a customer, that I don't need to go anywhere else. Thank you Jerry, Chris, Yvonne and all the wonderful mechanics.
